About Nepean Hunters Club

Nepean Hunters Club Inc. was formed in 1970 with the first few meetings being held in the lounge room of the club's founder. The founders perceived the need for a club that would cater for the needs of the growing numbers of hunters living in the outer western suburbs and the Nepean Basin region. The club has had a few meeting venues over the years but now has found a home at the Nepean Rowers Club.
The slogan 'Ethical Hunting, Game Management and Conservation' was adopted by the founding members and cannotated a philosophy, it can be argued, that was before its time in the Australian context. The members felt that traditional tally hunting should be discouraged and instead recommended that fellow members hunt selectively for trophies. To this end the club has introduced Hunter Education courses which instruct members on game selection and meat harvesting. Trophy competitions were initiated in 1971 and were intended to encourage all members to hunt for quality rather than quantity.
The club is an active member in the Federation of Hunting Clubs and a proud supporter of the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party. Such organisations afford the club an avenue to influence decisions concerning recreational hunting. The club, with the steadfast support of its members remains a strong, vibrant non-profit organisation dedicated to the time-honoured pastime of hunting.
Many of our members belong to more than one club. A reasonable assumption would be that it is difficult to cater for all the wants and needs of individual hunters. However, Nepean Hunters Club has definitely developed a format that has provided benefits to both old and new members since 1970. Entertainment, advice, information and educational topics are provided at our monthly meetings. The first half of these gatherings are formal and often deal with club business and issues that directly or indirectly affect shooters. The remainder of the meeting is dedicated to entertainment. Examples of past entertainment include: general purpose hunting dogs, pig dogs, reloading, custom made knives, sporting goods, snakes and the safe handling and storage of firearms.
Club raffles consistently provide excellent prizes and have included: guided hunts, binoculars, scopes, spotlights, fridges, clothing, tents and barbeques. An annual auction enables hunters to sell their unwanted gear. We also hold a Trophy Competition every November.
The introduction of the Nepean Bow Hunters in 2000 has added a new group of dedicated hunters to the club.
Nepean Hunters Club Inc. is a democratic and financially responsible organisation that enables it to effectively serve Sydney's hunting community.
